Secondhand smoke is one of the most serious problems about cigarettes.

So, we considered the way to prevent this.

First, we constructed a hypothesis that

the reason some people smoke on the street is because they have little time.

We also considered the way to prevent this.

“Telework” means working anywhere we want; like our house, by means of ICT,

short for Information Communication Technology.

It has been spreading among people who cannot work at their office

because of parenting or care and engaged in an IT-related business.

We think people who smoke on the street will decrease

if businesses promote teleworkbecause they go to the office less.

However, not everyone agrees with it and we don’t think promoting it leads to getting rid of secondhand smoke completely.

 1 .Telework

  • Our consideration

Besides, when we go out less, there’s a possibility that

we can suffer from life-related diseases from smoking at home.

It can cause the smoker’s family to suffer health damage from secondhand smoking.

So, we concluded that promoting telework wouldn’t work.

We think secondhand smoking can be prevented

by joining a projectcalled “Jisa Biz” by Tokyo Metropolitan.

It’s a campaign to increase work efficiency and reduce irritation by avoiding rush hour on the trains.

  • Our consideration

We think most people who smoke on the street are commuters.

If they go to the office earlier they have a little more time, so they can smoke at the smoking space.

So, we concluded that going to work earlier can have a good effect on people who have some time to smoke.

 2 .Adjustment of working time

Then, we have also thought about secondhand smoke prevention

by using e-cigarettes or alternative uses.

E-cigarettes is an item that is used to enjoy vapor generated when liquid is heated.

Though they are not sold as “cigarette products”, the law is vague.

In addition, some of them include harmful substances like nicotine.

  • Our consideration

You may think e-cigarette as an alternative to stop smokers from smoking, but is it really true?

One smoker said that he didn’t feel he hadn’t smoked with e-cigarettes in our interview,

and what was worse, there are lots of uncertain health hazards brought by it.

So, we concluded the spread of E-cigarettes had nothing to do with good results.

Now, let’s pay attention to liquor. It contains alcohol and can cause health issues

like lifestyle- related diseases such as liver cirrhosis.

There are many restaurants where customers can both drink and smoke.

  • Our consideration

Many people drink liquor but there are problems about cigarettes.

So, we concluded that shifting the popularity from smoke to drink is not effective.

 2 .Liquor

Marijuana legal as luxury items in Canada in 2018.

The purpose of this is to regulate the distribution of marijuana and get rid of trafficking.

Can we prevent secondhand smoking by legalizing drugs like Marijuana?

  • Our consideration

The movement to make Marijuana legal isn’t active and having or growing it is banned by law.

So, even if it were legal, it would be difficult to decrease smokers

and reduce the harm by secondhand smoking.

To make matters worse, there is no doubt that new social problems will appear

and be more serious than secondhand smoke.

We concluded this opinion is not only unrealistic and it has many disadvantageous for everyone.

Although we reviewed three things that may be alternative uses, we couldn’t find the best one.

 3 .Drugs

JT, a famous Japanese company that sells cigarettes, recommends that

there should be smoking areas in restaurants and they say that 30% of restaurants adopt this system.

However, WHO says that it’s impossible to get rid of secondhand smoke completely

by separating smoking areas from other parts of the restaurants

on their policy recommendations in 2007.

  • Our consideration

When we go to restaurants that have implemented this system, it seems that smoke isn’t leaking. However, we find it smells unpleasant by the smoking area.

As WHO said, it seems impossible to get rid of secondhand smoke by only separating the smoking areas.

By the way, native speakers, from America, Britain and Canada,

also pointed out that doing so didn’t make sense.

The biggest problem about cigarettes to foreign people is smoking inside.

1 .Separation of smoking areas in restaurants

There are a lot of ashtrays in front of convenience stores and many people smoke there,

which leads to pedestrians or customers breathing in cigarette smoke.

Though some local governments have decided to remove these, we think it isn’t enough.

Some people think secondhand smoke doesn’t lead to serious health problems.

So, we’ll do a simple experiment. Let us suppose you pass at convenience stores with ashtrays

five times a day and breath secondhand smoke 10 seconds at a time.

The following shows the amount of “three harmful substances” including secondhand smoke per cigarette.

Since cigarettes are smoked in about 4 minutes, when you breathe secondhand smoke

for 10 seconds, you take 0.042 times the harmful substance.

As the above graph shows, you take in a large amount of harmful substance throughout your lifetime.

We also thought there’s a relationship between the places

where cigarettes were littered and smoking areas, and we conducted the following experiment.

2 .Parking lots of convenience stores

Tar→ 34.5mg Nicotine→ 1.27mg  CO→ 148mg

The places where cigarettes are littered

Think about the places where street smoking is allowed by checking the places

    where cigarettes are littered.

    2. Check the places where people can smoke and put another color of stickers on it.

    3. Consider the relationship between the places where cigarettes are littered and smoking areas.

There were not many littered cigarettes at the shopping arcade in front of the station

and the big condominium because cleanings were done there.

However, it seems that there is no relationship between the places

where cigarettes are littered and smoking areas.

Besides, they are gathered at the intersections on major roads

and we can conclude people smoke on their way to the station.

So, we think even if they are increased smoking area,

street smoking and litter won’t disappear unless smokers change their minds.

Check the places where cigarettes are littered around the route

from Nakayama Station to our school and put stickers on a map.

Let’s think about smoking areas in a building by comparing two.

The smoking area on picture 1, the door and smoking area are 3 meters away.

Since the sliding door closes quickly, we didn’t smell cigarette smoke and

we think it is a good measure against secondhand smoking to some extent.

On the other hand, in the smoking area on picture 2, the door and the smoking area are close.

So, cigarette smoke leaked whenever the door was opened. To make matters worse, it was by a restroom.

People who lined up to use the restroom in breathed cigarette smoke.

Besides, there are also vending machines there. Which made people stay longer.

In this way, each smoking area has a different location and structure so there is no clear solution.

It seems that there are both good and bad points.

In conclusion, we think smoking areas should not be in places where people gather.
